One of the earliest electronic fund transfer systems to be introduced in India is real-time gross settlement (RTGS). As the name implies, fund transfers through RTGS are effected immediately without any delay. This is primarily because the transactions are settled individually as and when they are placed instead of in batches.

One of the notable features of real-time gross settlement transfers is the minimum transfer limit of ₹2 lakh. This makes this electronic fund transfer system more suitable for high-value financial transactions.

Now, considering that RTGS is used for large transactions, it is essential to track their status to confirm whether the funds have been successfully credited to the beneficiary’s account. Fortunately, this can be done using the unique transaction reference (UTR) number.

In this article, we will explore this unique reference number in detail and get to know how to track the transaction status by UTR number.

Understanding the UTR or the Unique Transaction Reference Number

The unique transaction reference number is a 22-character alphanumeric code assigned to every RTGS transaction. It can be used to check the RTGS transaction status to ensure that funds have been transferred to the specified beneficiary’s account number.

The bank automatically generates the UTR number whenever an RTGS bank transfer is processed. The reference number consists of a combination of the initiating bank’s IFSC, transaction date and unique identifiers.

A typical unique transaction reference number looks like this: “HDFCR52024110800105866”. Here is a detailed breakdown of the UTR number.

  • The first four characters in a UTR are always alphabets that represent the RTGS initiating bank’s IFSC. In the case of the given example, the sender bank is HDFC.
  • The fifth character in a UTR is always the alphabet R, which indicates that the transaction was processed through the real-time gross settlement electronic fund transfer system.
  • The sixth character in a UTR is a number that indicates the channel through which the transaction was processed.
  • The next eight characters in a UTR number represent the date, month and year in which the RTGS transaction was processed in a YYYYMMDD format. In the above example, the characters are – 20241108 – which indicates that the transaction was initiated on November 08, 2024.
  • The final eight characters in a UTR number represent a unique identifier assigned to an RTGS transaction.

Role of UTR Number in Tracking Transactions

The unique transaction reference number’s role in RTGS transfers is crucial. Here is a quick overview of the importance of this transaction identifier.

  • It helps customers and banks verify whether an RTGS online transfer has been completed or is still pending.
  • If the transaction fails or is delayed, the RTGS UTR number is essential for error or dispute resolution.
  • It helps businesses and individuals maintain proper records of their financial transactions.

Where to Find the UTR Number?

To track your transaction, you need to first identify the RTGS UTR number. You can find the number in either of the following:

  • Bank Transaction Receipt

Once you complete an RTGS transaction, you get a transaction receipt as proof of payment. You can find the UTR number clearly mentioned on this receipt, along with the date, transaction amount, your bank account number and the beneficiary’s bank account number and IFSC.

  • Bank Statement

You can also find the RTGS UTR number on your bank account statement or in the transaction history section of your internet banking portal. The net banking portals of certain banks even allow you to filter transactions based on the date or amount. This enables you to locate your transaction easily and retrieve the respective UTR number.

  • Email or SMS Notification

Banks send notifications via SMS and email once an RTGS transaction is successfully processed. These notifications typically include the UTR number, date and transaction amount.

Step-by-Step Guide to Checking RTGS Status Using UTR Number

Here is a detailed step-by-step guide outlining three different ways to check the RTGS status by UTR number.

Method 1: Through Internet Banking

If you have an internet banking facility enabled for your bank account, you can quickly check the transaction status by UTR number by following the below-mentioned steps.

  • Step 1: Log in to your bank’s net banking portal.
  • Step 2: Depending on the bank, you might have to navigate to either the ‘Transaction History’ section or the ‘Account Statement’ section.
  • Step 3: Locate the RTGS transaction. Some banks allow you to filter the transactions based on the date, type or amount.
  • Step 4: Check if the transaction is successful by verifying if the amount has been credited to or debited from your account, depending on whether you are the recipient or the sender.

Method 2: Contacting Customer Support

If you have a current or savings account without an internet banking facility or prefer to do RTGS transaction tracking offline, here are the steps you must follow.

  • Step 1: Get all of the necessary details ready. These include the transaction date, RTGS UTR number, transaction amount and beneficiary’s account number and IFSC.
  • Step 2: Get in touch with your bank’s customer service through phone or email.
  • Step 3: Some banks may require you to validate your identity before proceeding further.
  • Step 4: Once you have validated your identity, provide the details of the RTGS transaction that you wish to track to the customer service representative.

The customer service official will inform you of the transaction’s status after checking and verifying the details you have provided.

Method 3: Visiting the Bank Branch

Alternatively, you can also reach out to your bank’s branch to get to know your RTGS fund transfer status. Here is a quick look at the steps you need to follow.

  • Step 1: Visit the home branch of your bank or a branch that is nearest to your location along with your identity proof.
  • Step 2: Provide your account and RTGS transaction details along with the unique transaction reference number, to the bank’s representative.

Once the bank official verifies your identity, they will provide you with the RTGS transfer status.

Common Issues With RTGS Transfers and Potential Resolutions

Although RTGS transactions are generally fast and reliable, you may occasionally encounter certain issues. Understanding the common problems associated with this electronic fund transfer system and its potential solutions can help make the process smooth and hassle-free. Here are a few common RTGS issues and how to resolve them effectively.

  • Delayed Transactions

RTGS fund transfers are processed in real time. However, delays may sometimes occur due to processing issues from the bank’s end, system downtime or incorrect details.

In the case of delayed transactions, it is advisable to wait for about 2 hours from the time the transaction was initiated. If the beneficiary’s bank account still has not received the funds, you can check the RTGS status by UTR number or contact your bank for further assistance.

  • Failed Transactions

An RTGS transaction may fail due to many reasons, ranging from insufficient balance and incorrect beneficiary details to technical errors. In the case of failed transactions, the deducted amount is usually refunded to your bank account within 24 hours.

If the refund does not reflect even after the stipulated 24 hours, it is advisable to raise a complaint with your bank using the UTR number.

  • Discrepancies in Transaction Details

Any discrepancy or mismatch in the beneficiary’s name, account number or IFSC code can cause processing issues. To avoid this, remember to always double-check the transaction details before initiating RTGS transfers. If you find an error after placing an RTGS fund transfer request, contact your bank promptly to take corrective action.

Tips for Ensuring Smooth RTGS Transactions

Following the tips mentioned below can help you minimise errors and ensure seamless payment transfers via RTGS.

  • Before initiating an RTGS transfer, carefully verify the beneficiary’s account number, name, IFSC and transaction amount to avoid errors that could lead to transaction failures.
  • Make sure that your account has enough funds to cover both the transfer amount and the applicable RTGS transfer charges.
  • Although RTGS transactions are processed 24/7, there is a cut-off time of about 40 minutes from 11:50 PM to 00:30 AM on all days. Initiating transactions during the stipulated cut-off time could increase the risk of delays.

Conclusion

If you are a regular user of RTGS, tracking the transactions using the unique transaction reference number is essential to ensure successful transfers. Fortunately, there are multiple ways to verify the transaction status by UTR number. If you experience any issue with RTGS transfers, be it a delay beyond the stipulated time or a failed transaction, get in touch with your bank to ensure that the issue is resolved promptly.
