Step up under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, the FSSAI or the Food Safety and Standards Authority is an autonomous body established under the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006. The FSSAI is responsible for promoting and protecting public health by implementing and supervision and regulating food safety by appointing food safety authorities on a state level.

The primary aim of FSSAI standards are:

  • The laying down of the standard norms for food articles on a scientific basis.
  • To maintain and regulate the manufacture, storage, sale, distribution, and import of food in the most optimal manner that operates within the framework of the Food Safety and Standard Act, 2006.
  • Ensure and facilitate the quality and safety of the food distributed to the masses and the public by culinary establishments.

Eateries and food joints are one of the largest and fast-growing industries. People find comfort and enjoyment in dining outside and ordering food from restraints and food establishments, and this helps in promoting the business in leaps and bounds.

It ensures that the people receive quality food for their money, food joints, and eateries are required to be certified by FSSAI and have FSSAI licenses.

FSSAI Registration of Food Establishments

All food restraints and establishments must conform to the FSSAI standards and must procure an FSSAI licenses certificate. This license acts as proof and permission for any place dealing in food to be a legal manufacturer and distributor of cooked and processed foods that are to be sold commercially to the masses. The license acts as a stamp of proof that a startup or sole proprietorship is a legitimate business that is dealing in food and culinary items.

Businesses and kitchen thus must apply for an FSSAI license registration to acquire an FSSAI license if they pass the FSSAI standards.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, FSSAI, has issued a directive to all the e-commerce companies to remove the listing of sellers who have labeled non-dairy products as dairy products. The directive also covers plant-based products. Wrongly labeling a product is strictly prohibited under the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards & Food Additives) Regulations, 2011. The exceptions include products like coconut milk and peanut butter, to name a few.

E-Commerce platforms have also been asked by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India to identify the Food Business Operator and issue a warning. The e-commerce platforms are at liberty to give a margin of 15 days before delisting their products. The Authority has also directed the state governments to investigate the matter and identify the offline sellers who are engaged in a similar activity.

FSSAI to consider new generation tools for ensuring food safety

On Tuesday, July 27, Arun Singhal, the CEO of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India or FSSAI, said that due to the pandemic situation it has become increasingly difficult for the regulator to monitor the food industries at both border points and domestic level. To overcome this problem, the FSSAI is deliberating the use of some new generation technological tools like machine learning and blockchain for ensuring quality and safety. While addressing a virtual meet, Mr. Singhal has requested the researchers in the industry to come up with some simple tools which can prevent food fraud through the utilization of rapid testing and real-time safe monitoring systems.

He further added that FSSAI is also considering the use of new generation tools like innovations in molecular research, chemical analysis and genome sequencing for finding the purity of food. For processing and production-related things, the Internet of Things (IoT) can be used. Since the use of recycled PET bottles and plastics has increased they are increasingly focusing on other packing materials but since such materials are not available in abundance they are also appealing to researchers for exploring new ways.

FSSAI and ASCI to partner against misleading ads

The FSSAI or Food Safety and Standards Authority of India and the ASCI or Advertising Standards Council of India have taken a pledge to protect the consumers of India from the false claims made by the companies in their F&B advertisements. According to an agreement made ASCI would be finding such advertisements that are violating the rules and regulations under the Food Safety and Standards (Advertising and Claims) Regulations, 2018. After which the FSSAI would then be investigating such violations. Through this series of steps, the ASCI would be strengthening the panorama approach of ensuring the protection of its consumers and other such guiding agencies, brands, and also the influencers.

Mr. Manisha Kapoor, who is the secretary-general of the ASCI, has said through such an agreement, the agency would be intensifying its scrutiny in the food and beverage sector. They would be using their Advertising Monitoring Service, to monitor around 900 publications and TV channels, and greater than 3,000 websites. Along with this, they would also be examining the local or regional ones. Their professional experts, with around decades of experience in hand in this sector, would be shortlisting such advertisements which would be requiring further scrutiny by the FSSAI.

Adding to this the chairman of ASCI, Subhash Kamath, said this would be a big collaboration. Their common goal is for safeguarding consumer protection which requires all of them to share their skills, resources and expertise in a most efficient way for curbing the threat of misleading advertising. For this new partnership, the ASCI would be setting up a 3 member expert committee for evaluating F&B advertising which would be identified by the monitoring team of ASCI. This agreement would be approved by Arun Singhal, who is the CEO of FSSAI, and also Professor Bejon Misra, who is the adviser of public affairs, ASCI, as of the first of July 2021.
