FSSAI Registration of Food Establishments
All food restraints and establishments must conform to the FSSAI standards and must procure an FSSAI licenses certificate. - Step 2: After opening the website and checking which license you are eligible for, proceed to click on the “sign- up’ option. Input the required information along with a valid phone number and Email ID in the sign- up form.
- Step 3: Choose a username and password which will complete the sign- up. Logging in will allow you to have an account on the FSSAI webpage.
- Step 4: log-in into your FSSAI accounts after getting an SMS or E-mail confirmation for your new FSSAI account. It is worth noting that the account made will be valid for only 30 days after which there is an automatic deactivation. The account user must register for the FSSAI license within the completion of a month.
- Step 5: After logging in to your FSSAI account, go to the FSSAI license registration at https://foodlicensing.fssai.gov.in/index.aspx and input the relevant information.
Another important note is that one should complete the FSSAI registration process on the go. If done otherwise, then the form will be considered incomplete and then rejected, and you will have to start the process all over again.
- Step 6: Before submitting the completed form, make a copy of it and take a print out of the same. Keeping a hard copy of the registration form will allow you to remember the information you provided and help in future reference.
- Step 7: After applying for the FSSAI, you will see a reference number on the form. Note down or save the number as it is required to help you track the progress of the FSSAI license registration form.
- Step 8: Finally, after successfully printing out the registration form and taking a print out, you have to submit the printed online application form to the regional authority or state authority with all the additional supportive documents attached.
- Note that you must duly submit the form within 15 days from the day of online submission of the FSSAI license registration form for consideration.
By following these steps, anyone who is in the food business can apply and register for an FSSAI food license.
Documents required for FSSAI License Registration
For the FSSAI registration process, there are certain documents that you must prepare and procure. These documents are evidence to establish your legitimate food business.
The documents required for FSSAI license registration are as follows:
- You will require to present the form which is completed and is signed and attested by the restaurant owner or the proprietor.
- As the owner, you will need identity proof, in any way like a Aadhaar card, voters ID card, driver’s license.
- Address proof of the location of the restaurant or business which is issued by a Government authority.
- If the business or company has other directors and/ or shareholders, then the Identity proof of each member or partner must also be provided.
- A valid Email ID and a valid phone number is a must. If the company or startup has a phone and e-mail of its own, then both e-mails and phones numbers of the opener and the startup must be provided.
- A plan form of food safety management must be procured and attached. If you don’t have one, then you can easily acquire it by visiting the nearest notary or merely downloading the document online.
- As your business or startup will be in a specific area or premise, proof of possession of the said premise must be attached. The evidence of the position of premise can be given by presenting a sales deed, rent agreement, electricity bill, and others such as these for the startup.
- Another document you need is a national occupational classification or a NOC from a municipal corporation or any local body.
- If you have a high-end upgraded kitchen, then a floor plan of the kitchen may be presented. It does not apply to smaller startups and kitchens.
- If you have multiple partners who run the food eatery or business alongside you, then the partnership deed should be presented. If the business operates from some other premise, then an Affidavit of Proprietorship can also be attached with the registration form.
- Every kitchen and food business has a unique selling point. So, make sure an attachment of the list of food categories is there with the rest of the necessary documentation.
- A list of the different types of heavy kitchen equipment (if any) should also be submitted. Especially if the food enterprise focuses on large-scale manufacturing.
- Finally, the medical certificates of all the employees and partners need to be provided to ensure hygiene and quality checks.
Not all the documents will be readily available for the different types of food businesses. Smaller startups will not need some of the documents mentioned above. What is essential is to provide all the documents that you can procure for the FSSAI license registration.

FSSAI License Renewal
Just as having an FSSAI license is mandatory, so also is its renewal The extension of the validity of an FSSAI license can be for a period of 1 to 5 years. After that, the license needs renewal to continue with its benefits and brand mark.
The validity of the license is up to the applicant themselves, but they cannot miss out on renewing the license when it is nearing the end of its tenure. If the applicant fails to renew the license, then he or she is liable to a penalty fine. If the license were to expire, then the business owner will be prohibited from continuing the food activities that the business was conducting.
There are specific points to keep in mind when talking about FSSAI license renewal.
- The license must be renewed 120 days before its expiry.
- The extension of the renewal is also for 1 to 5 years. The cost of renewing will also increment depending on the extension period.
- If one fails to renew the license before its expiry, then he or she will be charged Rs. 100/- each day from the day of expiry till the renewal.

- Step 3: click on the option that reads ‘ apply for renewal of license.’
- Step 4: a list of links shall appear out of which you need to click on the one that applies to you.
- Step 5: confirm renewal by clicking the “OK” button on the confirmation pop-up.
- Step 6: attach and upload the requested documents.
- Step 7: save the newly acquired reference number for future tracking of the progress of the FSSAI license renewal.

Similar to that of the FSSAI registration process, the applicant must make sure that he or she should apply and submit the FSSAI renewal form and associated documents before the completion of the tenure of the FSSAI food license.
Important things to know about FSSAI license renewal
When renewing your FSSAI license, there are a couple of things that you must keep in mind:
- The fee amount for renewal of the FSSAI license is dependent on the selected number of years. The higher the years, the more will be the fees. The maximum renewable period for an FSSAI license is for five years, which has an associated cost of Rs. 7500/-
- The FSSAI license renewal form ‘C’ needs an attestation with a self-declaration copy along with the license fee for the stipulated years and other documents.
- For renewal, there is a requirement for a photo identity proof, which can be in the form of an Aadhaar card, driving license, voter’s ID card or passport.
- If the applicant has not received their renewal of the FSSAI license after completing the procedure, then he or she need not wait for it. The applicant can immediately resume business.
- The applicant can track the progress and status of their FSSAI renewal via the reference code which they received on completing the renewal application.

- On completion of the FSSAI renewal process, the applicant’s food business will be under inspection, which shall be done by the representative authorities. Once the applicant has passed the inspection, he or she is given the all-clear signal to carry the business without any further worries. The purpose of the inspection is to ascertain compliance with the norms of the FSSAI license.
- Other than failure to renew in time, there are no additional penalties or charges. If the applicant can ensure to renew his or her FSSAI license in proper time, he or she can continue business operations without any hindrance.

The New CEO of FSSAI, G Kamala Vardhan Rao Takes Charge
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has a new CEO, IAS officer G Kamala Vardhana Rao, who started on Thursday. On December 26, Rao was appointed CEO of FSSAI by a Personnel Ministry decision. Under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the regulator is a statutory authority. ITDC, a Miniratna PSU under the Ministry of Tourism, was led by G Kamala Vardhana Rao as managing director. Additionally, he has held the positions of Director of Culture for the Indian government and Secretary for Kerala Tourism. IAS officer from the Kerala cadre, Rao is from the 1990 batch.

FSSAI Suspends Licenses of 15 Food Business Operators for Not Displaying Nutritional Value
FSSAI suspends licenses of 15 food business operators for not displaying nutritional Value 2020 saw the release of labeling and display standards for food service companies from the Food Regulator FSSAI. It will go into effect on July 1, 2022.
According to a PTI report, the FSSAI has suspended the licenses of 16 food business operators (FBOs) for failing to follow the rules. About 70 FBOs have requested more time to comply. Menu labeling for food service facilities with central licenses, outlets with ten or more locations, and online food business operators that sell food goods should declare on menu labels for certain foods.
The FSSAI had requested that they include features in their platforms, including mobile apps, that would allow for the presentation of calorie information and nutritional/allergen-related data. It would help FBOs to upload data to websites.

Campaign by FSSAI to check impurity in Edible oils
Adulteration of edible oils has been spreading quite fast and FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) will be conducting extensive checks from 1st week of August to trace trans-fatty acids in hydrogenated oils which are used for this adulteration. Apart from this, the labeling of the oils would also be checked. The samples would be collected right from the market level so that it is quite random and the authorities can get a clear example if there is adulteration.
As per FSSAI, if any oil is found to be below satisfactory levels then legal actions would be taken against the manufacturers. Apart from this, the quantity of the oil will also be measured against what is displayed on the packet. This campaign comes after the Solvent Extractors Association of India saw some unfair practices among edible oil manufacturers.

Online Delivery Platforms Asked to Display Restaurant Nutritional Information by FSSAI
There are many restaurant chains in India and all of them have been asked to display the nutritional information of their food on the Menu starting from July 1. The one mandatory information that they need to include is the calorie count of the various dishes served by them. Such regulations apply especially to the restaurants which have central license or at least 10 outlets. This is now being followed by FSSAI making the same rule for the online delivery platforms.
On Tuesday, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India directed food aggregators to include such vital information on their platforms. The restaurants along with the food e-commerce platforms are also required to mention or display other nutritional information such as symbols and logos for the various veg and non-veg food dishes, allergens present in the food, etc.

Ayurveda Aahar’ Logo Launched by FSSAI
On June 7, Ayurveda Aahar which prepares food in accordance with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, using only the healthiest ingredients and following the path of Ayurveda, gets a new logo. It was Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, Union Health Minister, who was present on the occasion of World Food Safety Day to launch the new ‘Ayurveda Aahar’ logo. It has been reported that the logo will help in the easy identification of the products while also reinforcing the quality of the Ayurveda products. This will also ensure that the Ayurveda Aahar products have their own unique identity which people can trust.
For the unversed, the brand is known for creating products that have “proven benefits to improve health & wellbeing” of the people consuming them. The products do not include Ayurvedic drugs or proprietary Ayurvedic medicinal products listed under Schedule E of the Drug and Cosmetic Act, 1940.

New regulation for beer and bread to be launched in two to three months: FSSAI
India’s Food Safety and Standards Authority will release new standards for two products: beer and bread. The launch is set to be launched in two to three months. CEO Arun Singhal stated that while beer brands would have to mention calorie content, bread manufacturers would label products as ‘multigrain,’ ‘whole wheat,’ or ‘brown bread.’He also said that this regulation would help consumers pick lower-calorie beer bottles, which currently mention alcoholic content by weight. Bread will be labeled as:
- Whole wheat- when at least 75% whole wheat is present
- Brown bread- when at least 50% whole wheat is present
- Multigrain- if the bread contains 20% multigrain
- Garlic bread- when at least 2% garlic is present
To help food safety and security systems, the FSSAI has signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the states. Moreover, FSSAI has asked to disclose percentage contribution to the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) according to different age groups. In addition, under the “Eat Right India” mission, to provide safe and healthy food, the FSSAI has also designated four police stations in New Delhi.

FSSAI has restricted TFA content in food products to 2% from 1st January
In a conference with Commissioner of Food and Drugs Administration), Shakeel-Ur-Rehman, FSSAI (India’s Food Safety and Standards Authority), has imposed restrictions on the industrial TFA (Trans-Fatty Acid) content in food products to 2 %
Trans-fats used by the FBOs are related to health diseases. Trans-fats are primarily available in partially hydrogenated vegetable oils/fats, margarine, vanaspati, baked, and fried foods.
The meeting was held on Friday with oil, bakery, namkeen, and sweets manufacturers. The rule restricts the use of TFA in the manufacturing/ processing of food products to 2%. All FBOs are required to accept the said regulation from January 01.
Commissioner sensitized all the stakeholders to agree with the use of high-quality grade and safe edible oil. He also insisted that safe and wholesome food must be provided to the general public.
Deputy Commissioner of Food Safety from Jammu made a comprehensive presentation on the survey stats and reports on trans-fat and edible oil. The survey was carried out by the FSSAI in partnership with Food and Drugs Administration, Jammu & Kashmir.
The FBOs are ensured 100 percent subsidy is forwarded for up-gradation and setting up of food laboratories.
Regarding this restriction, the Food Business Associations members ensured complete cooperation to the department.

FSSAI Registration Number on invoices is mandatory for all food businesses
Dr Subhadh Kumar said that from January 1st, 2022, all food businesses have to mention license/registration numbers on cash receipts, invoices and bills. This rule is implemented by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
Dr Subhash, District Health Officer, said that the Food Safety Act states that every FBO should obtain a food license. But many food businesses do not have licenses or registration certificates. Earlier, tracing details of the shopkeeper or the food business operator was problematic. Due to incomplete details, it was difficult to resolve complaints of the consumer.
DHO added that this new rule is issued to make things easier for the consumers. The new rule ensures that consumers are buying items from registered shopkeepers. For registration, shopkeepers can apply for a license online at www.foscos.fssai.gov.in. A government fee will be charged for the registration. Moreover, shopkeepers are required to display the expiry date of the sweets. He also informed that this rule is effective October 1, 2020.

Food Safety Connect app makes the registration process easy for a large number of unorganized micro and small food businesses. Food Business Operators (FBOs) can easily file an application for FSSAI registration in the app using their smartphones. FAQs regarding licensing and registration, regulations, and other details are available in the app that can be easily accessed.
Resource material regarding the list of notified laboratories for food testing, inspection checklists, list of Food Safety Mitras, product standards, FoSTaC training program, etc., can be easily accessed by FBOs through the app.
Consumers also benefit from this app in the form of informatory videos, books, and guidance documents related to safe and healthy eating practices. Eat Right India Campaign at Srinagar
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has initiated a new “Eat Right India” campaign. They have selected 150 districts across the nation, one among them being Srinagar. FSSAI has collected 48 samples of various eatables like milk, chewing gum, etc. They have sent them for testing in the laboratory to check if they qualify the set standards for human consumption.
As a part of the Eat Right Campaign, a surprise visit was made to various markets to check the hygiene and food quality. As a result, a mutton shop was sealed immediately, and a local bakery was also destroyed owing to its low-quality food products.
The campaign includes registration and licensing drives, samples testing, inspections, training for FBO, and consumer awareness camps in Srinagar. The main motive of the campaign is to ensure that food is safe for both people and the planet.

FSSAI introduces new Green ‘V’ Logo to encourage Veganism among Indian Consumers
FSSAI has taken key steps to eliminate animal testing procedures for food products. A unique idea jointly designed by Food Safety and Standard Associations (FSSAI) and the vegan consumer associations, the letter V will be prominently displayed in vegan food packages. Vegan foods do not contain any additives, ingredients, or processing auxiliaries associated with animal origins such as fish, meat, honey products and even insect origin products such as dyes and bone char.
FSSAI CEO Arun Singhal opined that the green V-shaped logo should get more traction and this is a definitive stride towards increasing “veganism” in the Indian masses. A plant-based diet that doesn’t involve animals is becoming popular with Indians who are shunning GMOs as they involve unhealthy production practices such as animal torture and the addition of animal residues. FSSAI is enabling empowered thinking among modern humans with the intention to protect animals against cruelty.

E-Commerce Firms To Delist Non-Dairy Products Labelled As Dairy Products On The Platform
Customers shop a lot on e-commerce platforms. They offer convenience and great discounts. Some products, however, have now come under scrutiny.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, FSSAI, has issued a directive to all the e-commerce companies to remove the listing of sellers who have labeled non-dairy products as dairy products. The directive also covers plant-based products. Wrongly labeling a product is strictly prohibited under the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards & Food Additives) Regulations, 2011. The exceptions include products like coconut milk and peanut butter, to name a few.
E-Commerce platforms have also been asked by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India to identify the Food Business Operator and issue a warning. The e-commerce platforms are at liberty to give a margin of 15 days before delisting their products. The Authority has also directed the state governments to investigate the matter and identify the offline sellers who are engaged in a similar activity.
