  • Udyam Registration categorises businesses as either Micro, Small or Medium, based on investment and turnover limits that were revised upwards as of 1 April 2025.
  • A Micro enterprise will now have the right to invest up to ₹2.5 crore and have turnover up to ₹10 crore, about double the limits of previous years.
  • Only Aadhaar, PAN and basic details of the business are required, with no paperwork involved.
  • It can be done completely online and a permanent business reference number is generated.
  • Businesses benefit from access to cheaper loans, preferential tax treatment and government tenders.

Udyam Registration is a procedure under a government scheme that allows registering a firm as a Micro, Small or Medium Enterprise (MSME). It was initially launched in July 2020 as a substitute for Udyog Aadhaar and currently operates under the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME). It is a self-declaration form; a proprietor physically fills in their Aadhaar and PAN card particulars online and receives their 12-digit Udyam Registration Number and the Udyam registration certificate.

This certificate authenticates the status and provides a lot of financial, legal and procurement benefits that are otherwise restricted.

What is the Eligibility Criteria for Udyam Registration?

Below are the eligibility criteria that a business should meet in order to register for Udyam:

  • The business would be eligible depending on two criteria: investment in plant and machinery and equipment or the business’s turnover in a year.
  • To avail the facility, the company needs to fulfil both at the upper boundary limits; going beyond the upper boundaries would move the enterprise to a higher category.
  • Proprietorship, Partnership firms, Limited liability partnership, private limited companies, Cooperative society, Hindu Undivided Family or an association of persons could make an application to avail this benefit when involved in activities such as manufacture, services and trading.

What is the Latest Revised MSME Classification (As of 1 April 2025)?

CategoryInvestment LimitAnnual Turnover Limit
Micro EnterpriseUp to ₹2.5 croreUp to ₹10 crore
Small EnterpriseUp to ₹25 croreUp to ₹100 crore
Medium EnterpriseUp to ₹125 croreUp to ₹500 crore

The investment thresholds increased 2.5 times while turnover thresholds doubled across all categories. Some relevant notes:

  • Investment figures do not include land and buildings for manufacturing units, and turnover figures exclude exports.
  • Classification is re-verified every financial year with the Income Tax and GST data, and an enterprise may move between categories as figures change.
  • If there are multiple units registered under the same PAN, figures will be aggregated for the purpose of classification.

What are the Main Benefits of Udyam Registration?

Udyam Registration transforms a small informal business into a certified MSME, which comes with numerous benefits that lower the cost of doing business.

  • Collateral-free loan schemes and concessional rates of interest: Access to credit guarantee schemes and priority sector lending, enabling lenders to offer loans without any security.
  • Subsidies on patents and trademarks: Reduced registration fees for intellectual property.
  • Tax and compliance benefits: Rebates on taxes due under state and central MSME schemes, and relaxation on labour and environmental compliance in some states.
  • Protection against delayed payments on the buyer’s side: Under the MSMED Act, 2006, buyers must pay the Micro and Small enterprise within 45 days, failing which they are charged compound interest on the delay. Section 37(2)(g) of the Income Tax Act, 2025 makes such expenses of the buyer non-deductible, although this does not apply to Medium enterprises.
  • Preferential treatment in tenders and procurement: Public tenders and the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) have a certain percentage reserved for MSMEs, and usually offer exemption from tender and Earnest Money Deposit (EMD).
  • Ease of onboarding with corporate buyers: Enterprises classified under MSME find it easier to do business with big corporations.

What are the Relevant Documents Required for the Registration?

Two types of documents are required: identity proof and business-related documents. Fortunately for the applicant, most are obtained digitally.

  • Aadhaar Number of the proprietor, managing partner or authorised signatory.
  • PAN Card 0f the entity applying, which is used to verify turnover and investment figures using linked databases.
  • GSTIN is mandatory for LLPs, companies, trusts and cooperatives. Proprietorships and partnerships below the mandatory GST threshold can forgo this.
  • Bank account details are useful to link loan schemes, but not always mandatory.

No physical documents are to be uploaded, with verification taking place digitally using these inputs.

What is the Right  Process to Apply for Udyam Registration?

The official Udyam portal (udyamregistration.gov.in) is the only authorised website to apply. It is also completely free:

  • The details of the proprietor, partner or authorised signatory are entered and verified using an OTP.
  • PAN and related business details are validated, where the system will pull in the income tax and GST turnover figures automatically.
  • Fill in enterprise details, such as name, organisation type, address, number of employees, activity and the appropriate NIC (National Industry Classification) code. Using the right code is crucial as it is a common reason for delay.
  • Mention the value of investment and turnover to decide whether your firm can be under the Micro, Small or Medium category of business.
  • Issuance of certificate: On successful validation, the system will immediately provide a unique 12-digit Udyam Registration Number, and the certificate containing a QR code will be available for download.

Conclusion

Udyam Registration is not a bureaucratic formality but a pragmatic decision-making aid for any small or growing business in India. The framework is simple – verify whether the investment and turnover figures fall within the new 2025 limits, provide Aadhaar and PAN details, complete the online form and use the certificate to gain access to cheaper credit or tax breaks. Businesses that fail to utilise this lose out on substantial benefits, and with the classification limits being higher than before, now is a good time to complete the Udyam Registration online in a nominal few minutes and reap the rewards.
